European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’

European leaders including Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions were placed on figures that were central to efforts to introduce legislation governing American tech companies.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in condemning the move.

The restrictions were enacted this week against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
