The Gaming Giant Recruits Popular Battle Royale Lead to Boost Challenged Hero Shooter Ambitious Title

The renowned publisher has appointed a seasoned producer from Respawn Entertainment to direct the development team at 31st Union, which is currently developing the anticipated over-the-shoulder roguelike extraction-shooter known as this innovative game.

Management Transition Follows Mixed Reception

The new appointee takes on the leadership position at 31st Union following the dismissal of previous head Michael Condrey, who was reportedly let go due to the game's underwhelming early showing last fall.

Recently, 2K president David Ismailer updated employees about this organizational change through an internal memo, which emphasized that early feedback sessions had indicated the necessity for a distinct direction.

The president noted that the team is now overhauling Project Ethos with a renewed approach, aiming to satisfy community desires.

Trend of Strategic Hires

This announcement follows a comparable step taken by the publisher in August, when they recruited an industry veteran from the Diablo team to work on the beloved franchise studio Cloud Chamber.

Below is the full content from Ismailer's communication:

Hello Everyone—

I understand you all just completed your town hall - I hope you’re as excited as I am with the good news. Previously I sent you all a update, I expressed the following: “I believe in this group. You all are some of the most motivated and talented developers we have had the pleasure to work with - and we’re looking forward for that collaboration to endure.”

With your dedication and flexibility, especially over the last year, you continue to prove that.

The player input from last autumn’s the game playtest was revealing. It confirmed the promise of a roguelike shooter but made clear we still had work to do. It highlighted the necessity for a sharper brand.

It has been motivating to see how far you’ve progressed. You accepted the input to consideration and overhauled Project ETHOS with a renewed direction - one that’s poised to deliver on its potential to our players.

The belief in Project ETHOS strengthens every day. To boost the outstanding development you’ve made, I’m excited to announce Ben Brinkman as the latest Lead of 31st Union. After a period of talks, he starts with us on next week.

His management and experience in the PVP shooter field is extensive, having dedicated the recent years developing and leading some of the most popular franchises in gaming, for example the acclaimed shooter, and lately, the battle royale hit.

Please join me in receiving him soon. We are all eager to persist witnessing the evolution of the game in the months to come.

The President

Background of the Incoming Head

Brinkman currently holds the position of executive producer and head of production at Respawn Entertainment for their flagship title. He earlier worked at Treyarch and Activision in multiple production roles on the Call of Duty series, and, earlier in his career, had assignments at 2K and Electronic Arts.

Game Details and Concept

Project Ethos was announced in October 2024 alongside a public demo. Then, the developers portrayed the title as a "no-cost, third-person perspective roguelike hero shooter and an innovative step forward on the genre."

"Build your perfect run—or die trying—in this 3rd-person action shooter! Customize your character in live gameplay to suit your personal playstyle," the description reads. "Face the competition with new abilities, stakes, and obstacles that shift every match. Will you withdraw carefully with your hard-earned loot? Or aim high, risk it all, and hope your team can achieve the highest spot? The decision is up to you."

The game has not yet received an announced launch window or supported systems, but players can expect further news as development progresses.
